Tomato Sandwich

So, here's a tomato-obsessed essay from NPR. Funny that the recipe suggested at the end is an old Hawkes family stand-by, though it makes the mistake of subsituting "the whiter the bread, the quicker you're dead," for a good whole wheat: http://www.npr.org/templates/story/story.php?storyId=106932330. (I planted Cherokee Purple this year, by the way, and they are delicious.)

  1. ha! so I guess we're not the only ones who love that sandwich. I'm still waiting for my shot at one this year. Ever tried one with store-bought tomatoes? NOT the same. I'd love to try cherokee purple.

  2. There's only one store bought tomato worth eating that way: it's called a "Campari" and they're sold at Costco. Pretty much overgrown cherry tomatoes. To my taste buds they have about 80% of the taste of a summer garden tomato and an incredible shelf life. (We just ate a few that had been on the counter for nearly 3 weeks!).
